In the list of the Creative Cities Network of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), three other Brazilian cities were recently added: Brasilia (DF), João Pessoa (PB) and Paraty. The network was created in 2004 to promote cooperation among municipalities around the world who are noted for having creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development.
Belém (PA) and Florianópolis (SC), in the gastronomy category; Curitiba (PR), in design; Salvador (BA), music; and Santos (SP), in the cinema mode, were already part of the Network.
Design, crafts and gastronomy made the difference in the three cities
Brasília is listed for the recognition of design currently developed in the Federal District; the capital of Paraíba for the quality of its handicrafts and popular artistic manifestations; and the city of the coast of Rio de Janeiro due to the creative gastronomy.
The Brazilian application, in the design category, had been launched in June of this year. Conceived by the architect and urbanist Lúcio Costa, the architectural project is considered a landmark of contemporary urbanism and led the capital of Brazil to be registered by the UN entity.
The city of João Pessoa announced that the integration of the city into the organ will give more visibility, credibility and market to several associations of artisans who produce with their own hands an alternative of sustenance and maintenance of popular culture.
The Secretary of Culture of Paraty informed that the title will be important for the municipality, because it will put it in an international network thus stimulating the gastronomy sector which will increase the generation of employment and income.
Creative Cities Network is spread across five continents
More 61 other locations in 44 countries the title of creative cities. With this, the UNESCO network has a total of 180 municipalities, from 72 countries, divided into seven categories: handicrafts / popular arts; digital arts; drawing; movie theater; gastronomy; literature and music.
By joining the network, cities are committed to developing and exchanging innovative experiences of promotion to the creative industry and popular participation in cultural activities. In addition, actions to stimulate and preserve local cultural manifestations should be integrated into sustainable urban development policies.
