One of the most indisputable features of Madeira Island is its incredible natural beauty. Part of this merit is due to the work of preserving the nature areas of the destination, which include beautiful gardens spread throughout its territory, especially in Funchal, the capital.
Several species of flowers are cultivated in Madeira due to its privileged location in the Atlantic, which provides mild climate all year round. Among endemic species and elsewhere in the world, most of them exhibit their season-independent charm. Its extreme importance for the local culture yielded until an exclusive festival: the Flower Festival, celebrated annually during the arrival of the spring.
Visiting the Madeiran gardens is like experiencing a spectacle of varied colors and perfumes, harmonizing with the environment in an impressive way, conveying an intense sense of tranquility. In the Santa Catarina Park, in the center of Funchal, the tourist can admire the beautiful coral-elegant, that inserts its reddish contrast among the green of the foliage of the trees. Already ascending to Monte, in the Garden of Santa Luzia, the Chinese hat draws attention by its curious format, which resembles the hats used by the Chinese.
The Monte Palace Tropical Garden has a considerable variety of plants and flowers from various countries, making it one of the most beautiful places on the island. Another place worthy of mention is the incredible Botanical Garden, with its magnificent flower beds in precise geometric shapes. It is possible to see a good part of the typical regional flora, including the golden hyacinth, abundant in land near the sea, and Sapatinho, one of the most traditional flowers of the island that develops up to 300 meters of altitude.
With ample green fields and lakes, the Palheiro Gardens have panoramic views and contemplate trees with more than 200 years of existence, as well as rare and valuable species of plants from different parts of the world.
In turn, the famous Farmers Market is the perfect place to instigate all the senses. It is possible to purchase many flowers grown on the island, in addition to delighting in exotic fruits. Some examples are tabaibo, avocado-pear, anona (with its velvety sweet pulp that mixes the taste of other tropical fruits better known), the various species of passion fruit, araçais, among others.
