The US State Department yesterday issued a travel restriction to holders of the country’s passport to North Korea. Also, US citizens who are on North Korean territory will have until September 1 to leave the country.
The measure may have an exception for American journalists and aid workers who are or are traveling to North Korea. But with the decision, the country will become the only destination where Americans will be prevented from traveling.
The US government plans such a move since June to avoid arrests and cases like Otto Warmbier’s. The US student died after receiving a 15-year sentence of forced labor from the North Korean government. He was released after diplomatic pressure from the United States, but he was already in a coma.
Through its state-run TV, North Korea reported that Warmbier’s death was “a mystery” and rejected charges that he had been in a coma because of torture and assaults in prison.
