The center of Portugal is popularly known for its imposing landscapes, historical monuments and tasty gastronomy. But there is another great attraction of the region that can surprise the most unsuspecting: surfing.
With its peak of popularity in Portugal in 1990 and another in the last decade, with the discovery of the power of the giant waves of Nazaré, the surf lives its apogee in the Center of Portugal. Today, the region has an intimate relationship with this activity so cool and travelers in this niche represent a significant part of the total number of tourists.
And do not think that the area is an excellent one asked only for professional surfers. There are also points and waves accessible to all athletes, including beginners who wish to learn the delicious adventure of surfing.
We have prepared a roadmap for those who want to venture not only to the Portuguese historical heritage, but also to play in the waters of the Atlantic in search of the perfect wave:
Praia da Barra
Very close to Aveiro, Barra beach is very extensive and offers an impeccable infrastructure to the tourist. Located between the Dunes of São Jacinto and the beach of Costa Nova, the site gathers centuries of Portuguese fishing traditions and hot spots for surfing. A must see cultural mosaic.
Buarcos
This beach is perfect for those who want to venture into the tubular, which are those formations where the surfer gets “in” the wave. In addition, the Buarcos wave is considered the longest right wave in Europe, ideal for beginner surfers, who want to evolve in the practice of the sport.
Nazareth
Giant waves crash into the shore attracting surfers to real challenges, such as the carioca sportsman Maya Gabeira, who recently surfed a 24-meter wave – the equivalent of an eight-story building. At any given time of year, the site is only suitable for professional surfers who already have experience in this radical adventure. For beginners or curious, it is possible to observe the phenomenon of the famous Fort of São Miguel.
Peniche
Recognized as the best and most consistent spot for surfing in Portugal, the Peniche Peninsula offers a coastline to the north and south of the ocean.
The result is excellent daily conditions regardless of the direction of rippling and wind. In 15 kilometers of coast, the surfer will find more than 20 places to train, with options for beginners and more experienced.
