The New Year holiday had 987 accidents registered on federal highways in Brazil by the Federal Highway Police (PRF), of which 183 were considered serious, with at least one death or person seriously injured. In all, there were just over 1,000 wounded and 67 dead.
Operation Rodovida, New Year period, held between December 29, 2017 and January 1, 2018, showed a decrease both in the number of accidents and in the number of fatalities. Between 2016 and 2017, there had been more than a thousand accidents, with 1.1 thousand injured and 87 dead.
According to the PRF, there were 36.7 thousand flagrante of speeding and 3,2 thousand irregular overtaking. The data still show 565 cars of infraction to drivers who drove after ingesting alcoholic beverage and 1,6 thousand caught without seat belt.
