The city of Quito, Ecuador, was recognized as the Leading Destination of South America at the World Travel Awards (WTA) for the fifth consecutive year, a prestigious award to the tourism industry worldwide. In addition, the Ecuadorian capital also won in the category Destination Leader of South America in Tourism of Meetings and Conferences.

The decision was announced during the ceremony of the World Travel Awards, which took place at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya Hotel in Mexico. International representatives from the tourism, hospitality and specialized press sectors participated.

With these awards, Quito becomes one of the final cities that will compete in the global World Travel Awards, at a ceremony taking place on December 9 in Vietnam.

Growth

According to recent official data, the arrival of foreign tourists by plane in the first half of the year grew by 2.3% over the same period of 2016, representing a total of 314,183 international tourists.

The wide and diverse cultural, gastronomic and artistic offer of the city, the natural beauties that surround it, like the Cloudy Forest, and the fact of being a modern and connected city are decisive factors in this increase of demand.

The city

In addition to being the first capital of the world to be recognized as Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1978, Quito was named Cultural Capital of the Americas in 2011 and is considered one of the 50 most beautiful cities in the world by the famous Condé Nast Traveler 2016.

The Cloudy Forest of Quito was included by National Geographic Travel 2017 as one of the 17 best places of natural beauty in the world to visit.
